Mining Trail Opens in Killarney, Co Kerry
A mining trail which gives glimpses into 4,500 years of copper mining in Ireland has opened recently at Ross Island, Killarney, Co Kerry. This new tourism product forms part of Killarney National Park. The site was recently found to contain the earliest known copper mines in North Western Europe. They are 300 years old and the site has been excavated over the past ten years. The Ross site is alongside the castle of the same name.

Copper, iron, lead and silver were mined in Killarney. A large pre-historic complex using metal working ores from Ross Island has been identified near the town of Killarney. Self-guided tours only are available and visitors are provided with a booklet. The walk is not strenuous and at just over 2.75 km in length, can be walked comfortably in just over an hour. However, it is advisable to wear strong shoes.

The mines at Ross Island ceased work in the early 19th century. As well as mine workings and encampments, several specimens of rare trees and plants that line the 3 km trail are marked. These include the unique Killarney White Beam, Giant Silver Fir, Beech Groves, Alder Groves, Mediterranean Arbutus and Monterey Pines.

Limestone sites as well as deer rutting holes are also indicated along the trail which includes the cottage rented by the romantic poet, Peter Bysshe Shelley. It is believed he started to compose his poem, Queen Mab, in Killarney. The opening of the trail also marked the return of a pair of 17th century Dutch canons to nearby Ross Castle.

Christmas in Killarney
“The holly green, the ivy green
The prettiest picture you've ever seen
Is Christmas in Killarney
With all of the folks at home
It's nice, you know, to kiss your beau
While cuddling under the mistletoe
And Santa Claus you know, of course
Is one of the boys from home
The door is always open
The neighbors pay a call
And Father John before he's gone
Will bless the house and all
How grand it feels to click your heels
And join in the fun of the jigs and reels
I'm handing you no blarney
The likes you've never known
Is Christmas in Killarney
With all of the folks at home”
