Grant supports entrepreneurship in the life sciences
On April 11, The Fox School of Business’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institute received a grant of $150,000 from the State of Pennsylvania earmarked for its Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ) program supporting entrepreneurship in the life sciences. The grant was given at a ceremony where the keynote speaker was Governor Ed Rendell.
The grant is part of the $6.4 million Governor recently announced to support the state’s Keystone Innovation Zones (KIZs) partnerships between private sector businesses and universities. KIZs aim to commercialize university technologies and broadly foster entrepreneurship in science and technology throughout Pennsylvania and create new opportunities in advanced technologies.
Through its Innovation & Entrepreneurship Institute (IEI), Temple is a member of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s new KIZ, BioLaunch 611, which will focus on launching new companies in the life-sciences industry in North Philadelphia and the city’s suburbs along the route 611 corridor.
“This new funding for BioLaunch 611 will enable Temple and its KIZ partners to link start-up companies in the medical, dental, pharmaceutical and bioengineering fields to resources, such as incubation space, funding, mentoring and other research and business resources, “ said IEI’s executive director, Chris Pavlides, who accepted the grant at the ceremony.
In addition to Temple, major partners include Fox Chase Cancer Center and Lankenau Institute. Other partners include Biostrategy Partners, Citizens Bank, Trinity Capital Partners, LaSalle University, Pennsylvania College of Optometry and others.
