Fox welcomes 24 new faculty

The Fox School is pleased to announce the appointment of 24 new faculty to nine of its departments. The faculty bring to Fox outstanding credentials in research, teaching, and practical experience.

Accounting

Jose Plehn-Dujowich
Assistant Professor, Accounting
Dr. Jose Plehn-Dujowichhas been appointed as an Assistant Professor of Accounting. He joins The Fox School from the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY). Dr. Plehn-Dujowich received his PHD in economics from the University of Chicago. His research focus is in the areas of industrial organization, growth and development, and applied microeconomics. He has published in the European Economic Review, Economics Letters, Economic Bulletin, and Review of Economic Information Systems Research, and for a special issue of the MIS Quarterly, the flagship journal of the field. She is a member of the editorial review board of Production and Operations Management. Dr. Chen is also an ad hoc reviewer for many prestigious journals.

Stephen Sullivan
Instructor (Practice), Accounting
Mr. Stephen Sullivan is joining Fox as an Instructor (Practice) in the Accounting department. He received his BS in accounting from LaSalle University and later obtained his MBA in finance from Temple University. Shortly after, he received his CPA certificate for Pennsylvania. Professor Sullivan started his teaching career in 1988as an Accounting Instructor at Temple University, where he was able to implement information technology into the class- room. Mr. Sullivan has also worked for St. Joseph’s University, where he taught under- graduate and graduate level courses. Professor Sullivan has experience outside of the classroom as well. He is a business broker and is able to bring together sellers and buyers of businesses, handle negotiations, and close sales.

Finance

Michael Boldin
Assistant Professor (Practice), Finance
Dr. Michael Boldin has been appointed as an Assistant Professor (Practice) in Finance. Dr. Bold in received his PHD in economics from the University of Pennsylvania. Most recently, he has served as the director of Research Support Services at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He has also worked as an economist with the Conference Board and Federal Reserve Bank of New York. His research examines methodologies, long-term market volatility, and monetary policy. He has published in Studies in Nonlinear Dynamics and Econometrics, Journal of Social and Economic Measurement, Journal of Business, and Conflict Management and Peace Science. He has presented his work at various regional and national conferences, like the American Economic Association Meetings. Dr. Boldin is also a reviewer for various journals.

Traci Ray
Assistant Professor (Practice), Finance
Dr. Traci Ray joins the Finance Department as an Assistant Professor (Practice). Dr. Ray received her PHD in finance from Boston College. She is a chartered financial analyst. She has served as a visiting assistant professor at Xavier University in Ohio. Dr. Ray’s research interests include the relationship between firm growth opportunities and systematic risk. She has worked as an investment analyst for Pacholder Associates, as a convertibles associate with the Susquehanna Group, and as a director of investment analysis with Radcliffe Capital. As a principal at Convert Analytics, she created a multi-factor valuation model, a long-short strategy for a multi-strategy fund, and an automated portfolio analysis and risk management system for convertible arbitrage portfolios. Dr. Ray has published in the Journal of Housing Research and currently has two working papers.

Yuzhao Zhang
Assistant Professor, Finance
Dr. Yuzhao Zhang has been appointed as an Assistant Professor of Finance at the Fox School. Dr. Zhang received his PHD in finance in May 2008from the University of California, Los Angeles. He was awarded the UCLA Anderson School’s Center of Finance and Investments Dissertation Fellowship and the UCLA Regents Fellowship. His research examines the relationship between aggregate stock returns and the capital flows to the stock market from contrarian investors, whether the early exercise premium contains information about future underlying returns, and lastly alternative variance estimators for pricing options. Dr. Zhang has a paper under review in the Review of Financial Studies, a top tier journal in finance, and three working papers. Also, he was a presenter and discussant at the European Finance Association Annual Meeting.

General and Strategic Management

Mercedes Delgado
Assistant Professor, General and Strategic Management
Dr. Mercedes Delgado has been appointed as an Assistant Professor of General and Strategic Management. She was a visiting scholar at Kellogg School at Northwestern University, and was also a post-doctoral fellow under Professor Michael Porter in the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at the Harvard Business School this past summer. She is also a post-doctoral fellow in the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Dr. Delgado received her PHD in business economics from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Her field of expertise is international business, business strategy, regional and urban economics, industrial organization, and applied econometrics. Her specific area of interest is industry clusters. Dr. Delgado has published The Global Competitiveness Report and has several working papers. She has presented at various regional and national conferences. Dr. Delgado’s paper, “Do Clusters Really Matter for Companies’ Competitive Strategies? Evidence at the Country Level,” was nominated for the Haynes Prize for the Most Promising Scholar Award.

Tanvi Kothari
Assistant Professor (Teaching/Instructional Track), General and Strategic Management
Ms. Tanvi Kothari has been appointed as an Assistant Professor (Teaching/Instructional Track) in General and Strategic Management. Professor Kothari is in the process of obtaining her PHD in business administration at Temple University. Her research interests include international business strategy and strategic change, as well as information technology in organizations. She has been awarded several grants and scholarships. Professor Kothari has published three articles in the field of tourism, and has an article forthcoming in the Journal of Travel Research, a top tier journal. Professor Kothari has presented at the Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference, Academy of International Business Annual Meeting, and the 2008 Academy of Management Annual Meeting. Professor Kothari is also a reviewer for the Academy of International Business, Academy of Management, Annual Graduate Education and Graduate Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism, and Travel and Tourism Research Association Conference.

Arun Kumaraswamy
Assistant Professor, General and Strategic Management
Dr. Arun Kumaraswamy has been appointed as an Assistant Professor of General and Strategic Management at the Fox School. Previously, he taught at Singapore Management University and Rutgers University. Dr. Kumaraswamy received his PHD in management from New York University. He has published numerous articles in refereed journals, including Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal and Organization Science — all of these are top tier, A level journals in management. He has also published in MIS Quarterly, which is a top tier journal in management information systems. Furthermore, he has published an edited book — Managing in the Modular Age: Architectures, Networks and Organizations (2003) — and three chapters in edited books. Dr. Kumaraswamy has also presented at various national and international conferences, including INFORMS Conference and the Academy of Management Conference, and has published several articles in the proceedings of international conferences. He is a reviewer for many prestigious journals, and serves on the selection committee for the Academy of Management William H. Newman Award for Outstanding Papers, based on recent dissertations.

Constantine Pavlides
Associate Professor (Practice), General and Strategic Management Mr. Constantine Pavlides has been appointed as an Associate Professor (Practice) of Entrepreneurship in the General and Strategic Management Department. For the last four years, he served as the executive director of the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Institute of the Fox School of Business. During this period, he elevated the ranking of IEI to the top 10entrepreneurship programs in the nation. Furthermore, Professor Pavlides introduced Mid-Atlantic Diamond Ventures to be part of the IEI within the Fox School. He also initiated and negotiated Temple University’s partnership in the BioLaunch611+ Keystone Innovation Zone/BioStrategy Partners. Professor Pavlides is also founder & chairman of the Greater Philadelphia Senior Executive Group, Inc., a non-profit corporation. Prior to joining academia, Professor Pavlides has held numerous industry positions, including COO and CFOof Strike Force Technologies Inc, CFO of Electron Direct LLC, and head of the Global Business Development — Finance Group, Conoco Inc.

Mitrabarun Sarkar
Associate Professor, General and Strategic Management
Dr. Mitrabarun Sarkar has been appointed with tenure as an Associate Professor of General and Strategic Management. Dr. Sarkar received his PHD from Michigan State University. His research interests include technology entrepreneurship, innovation, strategic alliances, and international strategy. Dr. Sarkar has published in the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Business Research, Journal of International Management and Thunderbird International Business Review. He also has articles forthcoming in the Organization Science, Strategic Entrepreneurship, and Journal of International Management. Dr. Sarkar has received several grants. He has also been awarded the Academy of Management Best Paper Award and the Carl H. Galloway Award for Excellence in Research (four times), among many other awards. Dr. Sarkar has presented his work at the Strategic Management Society meeting, the Academy of Management meetings, and the Academy of International Business conferences, among numerous others. Additionally, he has served as a moderator for a panel on “Strategic Outsourcing” at the Globalization and Technology Conference, and was a panel participant for a seminar on internet strategies for small businesses. He has been a visiting professor at many prestigious institutions in Europe and Asia.

Sheryl Winston Smith
Assistant Professor, General and Strategic Management
Dr. Sheryl Winston Smith has been appointed as an Assistant Professor of General and Strategic Management. Most recently, she has served as a visiting lecturer at the University of Minnesota, and this summer, she was a visiting scholar with MIT’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Group. Dr. Winston Smith received her PHD in public policy from Harvard University. Her research interests include strategy and competitive advantage, innovation, entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial finance, international business, and finance. Dr. Winston Smith has published in Research Policy. She has published three chapters in edited books, including “Shaping Science & Technology Policy: The Next Generation of Research,” “Innovation Policy in the Knowledge-Based Economy,” and “Industrializing Knowledge: University-Industry Linkages in Japan and the United States.” She has presented at various regional and national conferences and symposiums. Dr. Winston Smith was awarded the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation grant by the Kauffman Foundation, and was a Next Generation of Leaders in Science and Technology Policy Scholar. Dr. Winston Smith is a reviewer for various journals and conferences.

Human Resource Management

Lisa Calvano
Assistant Professor (Teaching/Instructional Track), Human Resource Management
Dr. Lisa Calvano joins the Fox School as an Assistant Professor (Teaching/Instructional Track) in the Human Resource Management Department. She received her MS from the London School of Economics in 1995. Dr. Calvano then received her MBA from the Fox School of Business at Temple University, followed by her PHD in business administration with a concentration in human resource management in 2007. Dr. Calvano’s research interests include business ethics, social and environmental impact of business activities on local communities, business and community relationships, sustainability, economic development, social entrepreneurship, and globalization. In 2006, she was the driving force in organizing a student chapter of Students for Responsible Business in the Fox School for which she then became the faculty advisor. Outside of the classroom, Dr. Calvano has worked for non-profit organizations, such as the Spiral Q Puppet Theater and Fairmount Ventures, Inc., among others.

Crystal Harold
Assistant Professor Human Resource Management
Dr. Crystal Harold has been appointed as an Assistant Professor of Human Resource Management. Most recently, she was an assistant professor at Indiana University- Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). Dr. Harold received her PHD in industrial/organizational psychology from George Mason University. In 2005, she won the American Psychological Association’s Dissertation Award. She has published in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, International Journal of Selection and Assessment, Personnel Psychology, and Human Performance. Her research explores recruitment issues in human resource management, applicant-company environment fit, and enhancing overall recruitment utility. Dr. Harold has produced many technical reports on selection, recruitment, and retention for many city and county governments. Dr. Harold was awarded the IUPUI Honors Research Fellows Grant and the Meredith P. Crawford HumRRO Fellowship in I/O Psychology.

Legal Studies

James Lammendola
Instructor (Practice), Legal Studies
Mr. James Lammendola, Esquire has been appointed as an Instructor (Practice) of Legal Studies. He received his MA in Middle Eastern history at Temple University and his law degree from the University of Tulsa, College of Law. His research interests cover real estate laws, bankruptcy, auctions, and disclosure aspects. He has published in the Pennsylvania Law Weekly and Real Estate Supplement. He has presented at the Tri-State Academy of Legal Studies in Business, Mid-Atlantic Academy of Legal Studies in Business, and the North East Academy of Legal Studies in Business. He coaches students for LSAT examinations, and is also a coach for the Phi Alpha Delta mock trial teams.

Management Information Systems

Pei-Yu Chen
Associate Professor, Management Information Systems
Dr. Pei-Yu Chen has been appointed with tenure as an Associate Professor of Management Information Systems. She joins the Fox School from Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Chen received her PHD in operations and information management from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. She has published in Management Science, MIS Quarterly, and Information Systems Research. Dr. Chen also has an article forthcoming in Operations Research. She has received research grants from the Network, Electronic Commerce and Telecommunications (NET) Institute, the Carnegie Bosch Institute, and the Wharton e-Business Initiative (WeBI) Grant for two consecutive years. Dr. Chen is an associate editor of Information Systems Research, and for a special issue of the MIS Quarterly, the flagship journal of the field. She is a member of the editorial review board of Production and Operations Management. Dr. Chen is also an ad hoc reviewer for many prestigious journals.

Steven Johnson
Assistant Professor, Management Information Systems
Dr. Steven Johnson has been appointed as an Assistant Professor of Management and Information Systems. Dr. Johnson recently received his PHD in information systems from the University of Maryland, College Park. Prior to getting his PHD, Dr. Johnson worked for many leading IT companies, including Siebel Systems. His research interests include knowledge management, computer-mediated communication, large-scale social online networks, and the impact of information technology on organizations and industries. Dr. Johnson has written a teaching case, and has a forthcoming book chapter. Dr. Johnson was given the Allan N. Nash Award at the University of Maryland as the Outstanding Doctoral Student in 2007. He also received a Challenge Grant from Organizational Communication and Information Systems Division of the Academy of Management 2007. Dr. Johnson has been an ad hoc reviewer for many journals.

Paul Pavlou
Associate Professor, Management Information Systems
Dr. Paul Pavlou has been appointed with tenure as an Associate Professor of Management Information Systems. Dr. Pavlou received his PHD in information systems from the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. His research focuses on online auction marketplaces, electronic commerce, and information systems strategy. His research has appeared in MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of Management Information Systems, Journal of the Association of Information Systems, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Communications of the ACM, and Decision Sciences. Dr. Pavlou has won many Best Paper Awards, including the ISR Best Paper Award in 2007, the 2006IS Publication of the Year Award, the Top 5 Papers Award in Decision Sciences in 2006, the Best Doctoral Dissertation Award of the 2004 International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), the Best Interactive Paper Award of the 2002 Academy of Management Conference, and the Best Student Paper Award of the 2001 Academy of Management Conference (OCIS Division). Paul also won several Best Reviewer Awards, including the 2003 MISQ 'Reviewer of the Year' Award, and the ‘Best Reviewer’ Award of the 2005 Academy of Management Conference. Dr. Pavlou serves on the editorial boards of MISQ, JAIS, IJEC, ECRA, and DATABASE, and was a guest senior editor of a special issue of JMIS. He is currently a guest senior editor of a special issue of MISQ. He is also a reviewer for many journals.

Marketing

Neeraj Bharadwaj
Assistant Professor, Marketing
Dr. Neeraj Bharadwaj has been appointed as an Assistant Professor of Marketing. Dr. Bharadwaj received his PHD in marketing from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Prior to getting his PHD, Dr. Bharadwaj worked for the Miller Brewing Company. Most recently, he has held visiting professorships at University of Texas at Austin and University of Chicago. His research interests include marketing strategy, services marketing, and business-to-business marketing. He won the Best Paper Award in the Organizational Buying Behavior Track at the annual meetings of the American Marketing Association. Dr. Bharadwaj has published in the Journal of Marketing, Marketing Letters, Journal of Retailing, Journal of Business Research, and Industrial Marketing Management. Dr. Bharadwaj is a member of the editorial review board for the Journal of Business-to-Business Marketing. Additionally, Dr. Bharadwaj has received many teaching awards, including the Reggie Tate Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of Wisconsin, the Charley Osborn Teaching Award, and the Graduate Business Student’s Award from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas.

Angelika Dimoka
Assistant Professor, Marketing
Dr. Angelika Dimoka has been appointed as an Assistant Professor of Marketing with a secondary appointment in Management Information Systems in the College of Engineering. Dr. Dimoka received her PHD in biomedical engineering from the University of Southern California. Her research interests include modeling of information pathways in the brain, functional neuroimaging and applications to management decision making, and quantitative analysis of online decision making. Dr. Dimoka has published in Information Systems Research, Journal of Neuroscience Methods, Annals of Biomedical Engineering, and the IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Dimoka has been a referee for many conferences and journals. She was an associate editor for the International Conference of Information Systems and a senior committee member of the Grodins Research Symposium at the University of Southern California. She was awarded the Grodins Award for Outstanding Academic Research Achievement, and the Myronis Scholarship at the University of Southern California.

Eric Eisenstein
Assistant Professor, Marketing
Dr. Eric Eisenstein has been appointed as an Assistant Professor of Marketing, after having served as an assistant professor at Cornell University. Dr. Eisenstein received his PHD from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Eisenstein has worked in both marketing and management consulting firms, like Mercer among others. His primary research interests include managerial and consumer decision-making, decision support systems, decision aids, debiasing methods, and learning and the development of expertise. Dr. Eisenstein has published in the Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Consumer Research, Handbook of Consumer Psychology, Handbook of Marketing, Consumer Learning and Expertise, and Advances in Consumer Research. He also has a forthcoming article in the Journal of Business Research. Dr. Eisenstein has presented at many prestigious conferences. Dr. Eisenstein was awarded the Faculty Innovation in Teaching Grant three times consecutively at Cornell University.

Risk, Insurance and Healthcare Management

Hua Chen
Assistant Professor, Risk, Insurance, and Healthcare Management
Dr. Hua Chen has been appointed as an Assistant Professor of Risk, Insurance, and Healthcare Management. Dr. Chen recently received his PHD in risk management and insurance from Georgia State University. His research interests include insurance economics, risk modeling and securitization, corporate risk management, actuarial science, and asset pricing. He has papers under review in top tier journals. Dr. Chen has published in Reform of Economic System and the Journal of Economic Geography. Dr. Chen has presented at several risk and actuarial science conferences. Dr. Chen has received many scholarships and fellowships.

Statistics

James Delaney
Assistant Professor, Statistics and Finance
Dr. James Delaney has been appointed as an Assistant Professor of Statistics with a secondary appointment in Finance. Dr. Delaney received his PHD in industrial and systems engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Prior to getting his doctorate, Dr. Delaney worked for major investment companies in the region— Susquehanna Capital and Bank of America. Since 2006, he has been a visiting assistant professor in the department of statistics at Carnegie Mellon University and a National Science Foundation VIGRE Fellow. His research interests are in the areas of statistical computing, Bayesian methods, and risk modeling. He has published in the Journal of Quality Technology and Technometrics. He has also presented at many conferences.

Alicia Graziosi
Assistant Professor (Teaching/Instructional Track), Statistics
Ms. Alicia Graziosi has been appointed as an Assistant Professor (Teaching/Instructional Track) of Statistics. She received her MS in applied statistics from Villanova University. Ms. Graziosi is currently a PHD candidate in the statistics department at Temple University. She has received the Temple University Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Doctoral Student, and was president-elect of the Temple Association of Graduate Students in statistics. In the past, she has taught courses at Saint Joseph’s University, as well as at Temple. She has also served as senior special analyst for Towers Perrin, where she researched and implemented benefits administration calculators to assist clients. She also worked in employee training and has run in-house training sessions at Towers Perrin.

Gary Witt
Assistant Professor (Practice), Statistics and Finance
Dr. Gary Witt has been appointed as an Assistant Professor (Practice) of Statistics with a secondary appointment in Finance. Dr. Witt received his PHD in statistics from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. While obtaining his PHD, he was a lecturer at the Wharton, where he received the Murray Award for Teaching Excellence. Dr. Witt has over twenty years of experience in the financial industry, and spent ten of those years as a derivatives trader in both New York and London. Prior to joining the Fox School, Dr. Witt served as the managing director of Moody’s Investors Services, where he devised and published methodologies for various structured financial products.
