Issue 2   May 2, 2006
I would like to send a huge thank you to all those who took the time to submit their suggestions for our newsletter title. Our new name was in fact inspired by two entries submitted by John de Goei, LogicaCMG, and Erkki Poyhonen, TietoEnator. Thank you for your contributions. There is a bottle of champagne on its way to you both!

In this issue we are excited to announce the EuroSTAR 2006 Programme. Congratulations to those who made it onto this years programme. We hope we have put together a line-up that has a little something for everyone.

This month I am also pleased to announce that Registration for EuroSTAR 2006 is now offically open, which brings us one step closer to Manchester this December.

Don't forget the EuroSTAR London Mini Event is taking place this evening in The Novotel at 6pm and a second event is sheduled in Amsterdam on Thursday, May 4th. Don't miss this opportunity to get a sneak preview of what's to come at EuroSTAR 2006 and take home our exclusive Mini Event Gift Bag!

Kind Regards,

Susan McAndrew

A New Programme is Born!

by Jens Pas, I2B, Belgium

The EuroSTAR 2006 Programme has arrived.
As the proud Programme Chair, I can say is that this program really smiles, the reason being because it is about people. As I mentioned in the previous issue of this newsletter, many people submitted proposals related to people issues, even when the talk itself was technical.
So, I have the feeling that we are looking at a warm program, where people are the key point of attention.

Operational Excellence through Efficient Software Testing Metrics
Ramesh Pusala, Infosys, India

By Ramesh Pusala, Infosys, India

An effective software test manager needs a way to measure the effectiveness of a test process. Effective test process measurement is essential for designing, evaluating and managing a cost-effective test strategy. Effective software measurement gives a scientific basis for software engineering to become a true engineering discipline. The importance of measurement has been gaining acceptance and recognition as organizations mature. Process measurement and analysis and utilizing quantitative methods for quality management are the two Key Process Activities at Level 4 Maturity of CMM.

Test metrics are an important barometer used to measure the effectiveness of the software testing process. Firstly, define which key software testing processes can be objectively measured. By using this information as a baseline we can then define the metric(s) and determine the base information that will be tracked, who will track the information, and when it should be tracked? Then implement the processes necessary to effectively track, calculate, manage, interpret the defined metrics and identify areas for process improvement based on the metrics.

Well, the programme has been announced, registration is open and December in Manchester doesn’t feel that far away anymore. There has been a lot of interest in this year’s EuroSTAR while I have lost count of how many emails and calls I’ve had enquiring about how to become a speaker at EuroSTAR, wondering when the programme would be announced and funnily enough which hotel to book for the event. There really is an ever growing community of enthusiastic test professionals across Europe who want to share their testing knowledge, expertise and ideas with others – A sure sign that SOFTWARE TESTING IS BOOMING!
