Issue 9   December 19, 2006

Welcome to the last issue of the STAR Tester for 2006. I hope each issue has brought you some inspiration, help or knowledge that will enhance the way you look at testing within your own career.

The dust has just settled on another wonderful EuroSTAR event, a warm hello to all our friends and colleagues who made it to Manchester. Thanks for your contribution to a great conference! The 2007 event takes place in Stockholm, Sweden from 3-6 December next… seems like a long way away but the Programme Chair is already working on the Call for Papers and Participation and I’ll have more news for you about that in the January edition.
If you think your time has come to speak at EuroSTAR or you know people in your organization who’d like to give it a go, then make sure you’re details are on our database and you’ll receive your invitation to submit in early January.
I would like to thank each you for your loyalty throughout the year and I look forward to bringing you the first issue of 2007.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Kind regards,

Susan McAndrew
Editor

A Final Word From The 2006 Programme Chair

Dear Reader,

Now EuroSTAR 2006 is over. The EuroSTAR 2007 preparation work can begin. As my time as Programme Chair has come to a close, I would like to thank you for your participation in the conference and for the many kind words I received. Kind words for the complete team that made this conference what we hoped it would be: a warm and human conference with many exchanges of expertise.

Geoff Quentin Receives The EuroSTAR 2006 Testing Excellence Award

Congratulations to Geoff Quentin who was conferred with this year’s Testing Excellence Award at the EuroSTAR 2006 Gala Evening at Old Trafford, Manchester on the evening of the 7th December, 2006. The award was presented to Geoff by Dorothy Graham, before a gathering of Europe’s leading testers.

This recognition was conferred upon Geoff who has demonstrated many years of support and leadership in the software testing industry, promoted industry standards of excellence, and has contributed to the industry's growth as a whole.

Congratulations Geoff!

Previous recipients of this distinguished award include Andy Redwood, Lloyd Roden, Tim Koomen, Graham Babel, Stuart Reid, Dorothy Graham and Martin Pol.

The Influential Test Team

Congratulations to Declan Kavanagh, Insight Group, Ireland who received the Best Paper Award  presented by Sogeti at EuroSTAR 2006, Manchester.

The paper was written with a view to sharing Declan’s experience and tools that allow Test Managers become more influential in their organizations by creating visible business value for all stakeholders.
The proposition is that Test Managers take an entrepreneurial approach to running their function based on best practice business principals in addition to best practice test principals. This means understanding stakeholder customer goals and needs, creating services that address these goals and needs, proactively managing test core competence to address these needs and creating a shared vision and goals with all stakeholders.

The paper provides pragmatic examples of how best practice management tools can be used by the test team to create visible value such as Porters “5 forces model”, Value chain analysis, Core Competence analysis and SWOT analysis. It also provides a framework for the test team to creat a vision that can have a bottom line impact on the business.
