Issue 10   January 11, 2007

Welcome to the first issue of the STAR Tester Newsletter of 2007! I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas and I wish you all the best for the New Year.
This month’s issue has been rescheduled to coincide with the official EuroSTAR 2007 Call to Papers. But not to worry our next issue will be back to the first Tuesday of every month!

I am delighted to welcome Stuart Reid as this year’s Programme Chair. The EuroSTAR Team are looking forward to working closely with Stuart and his Committee in preparation for Stockholm this December.

The Call for Papers is now open; please forward this email to any of your colleagues who you feel may also be interested in submitting. This year’s conference theme is 'Defining The Profession', see further details below.

Congratulations to Lloyd Roden, Grove Consultants, UK who received the highest rating overall for his track session at EuroSTAR 2006. This month’s issue contains a summary of Lloyd’s session.

As Editor, I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage the submission of articles from newsletter subscribers. If you would like to contribute your ideas or have a topic you feel strongly about, please submit your articles to me at susan@qualtechconferences.com

I look forward to bringing you the latest information within the testing industry and updates regarding EuroSTAR 2007 throughout the year.

Kind regards,

Susan McAndrew
Editor

Stuart Reid - EuroSTAR 2007 Programme Chair

Hi, and a happy New Year to you all.

I would like to introduce myself as the Programme Chair for this year’s conference. As you may have noticed I work for a University and can imagine that this might give rise to some questions, such as:

“Isn’t this a conference for practitioners?”
“What does he know about testing in the real world?”, an
“It’s not going to be all about theory and standards, is it?”

Call For Papers - EuroSTAR 2007

"Defining the Profession"
Stockholm, 3rd – 6th December, 2007

The theme of the conference is ‘Defining the Profession’.

• Do you consider yourself a testing professional?  Do others?
• What allows you to make that claim?
• Is there a core set of skills?  Are they technical skills, people skills, or both?
• What is your single most valuable skill? Can you communicate it to others?
• Can qualifications define a professional tester?
• Can your organisation contribute a best practice to the profession?

By the end of the conference both delegates and speakers should have a far better picture of the current state of our discipline – and an opinion on the direction it should be moving in. This theme is intended to be inclusive and we will look at submissions covering all aspects of software testing. After all, if your message is of value to a professional tester attending as a delegate then it should, in some way, contribute to ‘defining the profession’.

Your participation will make this a conference to remember.  We look forward hearing from you.
Thanks in advance.

Stuart Reid, Programme Chair, EuroSTAR 2007

We Can’t Afford Not To Test

by Lloyd Roden, Grove Consultants, UK

During the last 20 years I have encountered various opinions and misconceptions relating to testing from Senior Management. Statements such as “do we really need to test for that long”, “surely a few simple tests would suffice” to “we need to ship…regardless of what testing say”.

Whilst we may cringe at some of these statements, underneath there is usually an underlying reason for what has just been said. During this session we looked at some of the misconceptions and what type of reason exists to create these.
