Issue 15   June 5, 2007

Welcome to the June issue of the STAR Tester Newsletter. It has been very busy here over the last number of weeks with the official programme launch. Not to mention EuroSTAR taking to the road again to host Mini-Events in both The Netherlands and Sweden. These events have been a tremendous success and I would like to thank all of those who attended. For a complete follow up on Mini-Events please see below.

May also saw the launch of the first EuroSTAR Live Webinar. Our new offering received great feedback from the testing community!
The next Webinar 'Using Lessons Learned to Challenge ERP Projects'  takes place on Thursday, June 14th and will be presented by Paul Gerrard, Gerrard Consulting, UK. To get a taste of what’s to come at this presentation please see Paul’s article featured in this month’s issue. If this is a topic that interests you, I urge you to Register Now and take this chance to hear it straight from the expert.

In this issue I am also pleased to bring you an article titled ‘Spotlight on the Keynotes’. I hope this provides an overview of what is in store for you at EuroSTAR 2007.

Kind regards,

Susan McAndrew
Editor

Using Lessons Learned To Challenge ERP Projects
by Paul Gerrard, Gerrard Consulting, UK

1.1 Why ‘Lessons Learned’?
‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’ This famous quotation by George Santayana reminds us that mistakes are not things to be filed and forgotten. If you think about it, when you get something ‘right’, what do you learn? Not much – you already knew what you were doing (unless it was a random act). But when you make a mistake, there is a discrepancy between the outcome and your intention – recognising the discrepancy requires us to make the correction and will help us to better work next time. As testers, learning from past mistakes should come naturally. If it doesn’t we are in big trouble. After all, a significant part of our job is to point out mistakes in other people’s work. If we aren’t prepared to learn, we could be accused of hypocrisy.

So learning from mistakes is a good thing – better still to learn from other people’s mistakes.

The Integration Test In The Large Is Of Crucial Importance
by Thomas Som and Jacolien Vukkink, Capgemini, The Netherlands

Systems that work well on their own do not yet make up a well functioning channel.

Setting
The integration of organisations is a hot topic within enterprises and governments. At present organisations are increasing the integration of their systems more and more on both national and international level. When multiple systems are connected, the importance of testing will increase. Not only the testing of these separate systems, but also the integration test in the large (referred to in this article as “integration test”) - also called channel test or ‘end-to-end’ test, is indispensable.

Mini-Events

The EuroSTAR 2007 mini events have taken place in both Sweden & The Netherlands with resounding success. These events coincided with the launch of this years conference programme and gave attendees a brief taste of the highlights of EuroSTAR 2007. We are grateful to Bob van de Burgt and Stuart Reid for their insightful presentations.

Thank you to our local partners, TestNet & SAST who had contributed greatly to these events. May 23rd saw over 200 of our Dutch testing colleagues congregate in Nieuwegein. Presentations from Ruud Teunissen (Polteq) and Paul Gerrard (Gerrard Consulting) on  ‘Test Estimation’ & ‘Lessons Learned to Challenge ERP Projects’ were well received. The evening  was kindly sponsored by Capgemini, LogicaCMG, Polteq, Sogeti & Valori. On May 31st EuroSTAR  co-organised an afternoon of Testing in Kista, Stockholm along with Enea & SAST. Here, over 80 Swedish testers attended some excellent presentations entitled  ‘Handling Combinatorial Explosion in Software Testing’ & ‘Myths Of Non-Functional Testing’ presented by Mats Grindal (Enea) and Stuart Reid (EuroSTAR 2007 Programme Chair).

Thanks to all who participated in both of these mini – events and congratulations to the Heini Veneberg and Pia Forsberg Edwinson on winning complimentary registrations to EuroSTAR 2007.We look forward to meeting you in Stockholm this December!

How Test Data Management Keeps Customer Information Secure
by Warren Daniels, Marketing Manager, Princeton Softech Northern Europe and South Africa

While most organisations access confidential personal information for legitimate purposes such as providing healthcare and financial services, increasing security risks challenge a company’s ability to manage and protect that data successfully. Identity theft, privacy violations and fraudulent access are widely prevalent. According to UK payment clearing association, APACS, credit card fraud alone amounted to just under £210 million in the first six months of 2006.
