I guess many of you will have already had your holidays – was the weather good? I'm writing this article in August – and watching the unseasonable rain falling heavily and listening to the not-so-distant rumble of thunder over the hills. Although rain at this time of the year is no stranger in England, when you get trapped overnight at work due to floods – that's no laughing matter. And I'm probably not alone in experiencing extreme weather. According to the UN's weather agency, many parts of the world have experienced record-breaking weather events this year, including heatwaves, snow, floods and droughts.

When you talk about metrics, everyone shakes his head and says, “Yes, metrics are important,” and then immediately wants to talk about something else. Many people think they don’t understand metrics, and therefore they fear them—but in reality we all use metrics every day: The alarm goes off at a predetermined time, indicating that it is time to get out of bed (a metric that signals an action is called a meter); We check the thermometer to see how warmly to dress; We keep an eye on the speedometer to avoid getting a traffic ticket; and on and on.

This Keynote titled 'Regulating The Profession' by Isabel Evans will take place on Thursday 6th December at EuroSTAR 2007, Stockholm.
It is July 2007. I have started to write an article to support my keynote on “Regulating the Profession” for the EuroSTAR September newsletter. In order to set the scene for discussing the development of a profession, I’m comparing and contrasting horticulture and software testing industries, so I begin to write about Linnaeus and the history of horticulture. But, inevitably, my thoughts are distracted by the news that a series of terrorist attempts in the UK have – apparently – been carried out by doctors and other health service workers. My subject for the article now changes from the history of professions to their ethics.

Predictable cost and good quality
Too often projects deliver software of which the quality is difficult to predict. Sometimes the project completion is delayed due to the continuous change of requirements while the software is still being built. The quality level must align with the company needs. It is extremely important that the planned benefits of an IT system are reached. When the benefits are not achieved it will cause much more damage than just the cost of delay. The reputation of a company might be at stake!
