The Path To Professionalism

by Bj Rollison, Microsoft Corporation, USA

Bj Rollison's Keynote: 'Path to Professionalism: Skills of STAR Performers' will take place on Wednesday 5th December at EuroSTAR 2007, Stockholm.

There have always been two key primary objectives of the software tester. The first is to provide business critical information to the decision-makers for risk assessment. The second one is to measure or evaluate the actual behavior or traits of software products against the explicit business needs and the implicit expectations of the customer. Testing is any activity designed to evaluate or assess the attributes or capabilities of a software program against stated and tacit expectations, and the results of those tests supply a wealth of information to the decision-makers. Software solutions are becoming more complex. Development practices are evolving (or reviving) the importance of up-front design and the need to drive ‘quality’ upstream. And software now permeates our normal lifestyles and users simply expect something to ‘just work’. These and other factors are affecting not only the importance of testing, but are also influencing the need for professional software testers to acquire a set of skills and knowledge that includes breadth and depth as the discipline of software testing also evolves to face these challenges.

Test Process Improvement Using TMM(i)
by Erik van Veenendaal, Richard Grooff and Rob Hendriks, Improve Quality Services BV, The Netherlands

Eric ven Veenedaal's Tutorial 'Test Process Improvement With TMM(i)' will take place on Tuesday 4th December at EuroSTAR 2007, Stockholm.

Introduction
More and more organisation are trying to improve their software development processes. The reference improvement model that is most often used is the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI). In this model process areas related to testing, verification and validation, are described. But the level of detail is limited, especially from the viewpoint of the test professional. To fill in this gap the Test Maturity Model (TMM) has been developed, which has recently been succeeded by the Test Maturity Model Integration (TMMi) [www.tmmifoundation.org]. These test models provide a structured approach for improvement of the test process. Within Europe more and more companies are becoming matured using the TMM. Consultants of Improve Quality Services have been involved in various improvement projects and share their experiences with the TMM(i) in this paper. Practical recommendations are given for the execution of test improvement projects according TMM(i).

'How To Develop A Reliable Test Effort Estimation'
presented by Ruud Teunissen, Polteq IT Services, The Netherlands

Date: Thursday, 11th October, 2007
Time: 10:00am Dublin- London / 11:00am CET
Duration: 30 mins

Key Points:

  • Even with little or almost no information available, it is possible to define a global estimate. By asking and answering a few questions, your estimate becomes more accurate.
  • The "average" project is a myth! There are always differences that influence the required test effort. Learn how to create an approach for effort estimation that you can tune and that is reliable, defendable and negotiable.
  • It's better to be honest than to admit you did not tell the whole truth at the start. It's essential for any estimate!
