Issue 27   June 3, 2008

Greetings from a surprisingly sunny Ireland! In this issue I have a special article from Bob van de Burgt containing details of 'The Future of Software Testing Manifesto' which will be created during EuroSTAR 2008.
This Manifesto will give major guidelines for the testing community’s journey into the future and workshops will be run throughout this year’s conference by two highly recognized experts- Dorothy Graham and Isabel Evans. The Manifesto will be revealed in the closing session on Thursday Nov 13th.

We have a very exciting Webinar taking place on Wednesday June 11th - Keynote Speakers, James Whittaker and Randall Rice reveal their thoughts on ‘The Future of Software Testing’ during this 30 minute event. Register Now to secure your place!

Congratulations to Henk van Merode, from KLM, Netherlands who has won our UEFA EURO 2008 competition which ran throughout April and May to coincide with the EuroSTAR 2008 Conference Programme launch. Henk will receive two tickets to the EURO 2008 Final taking place on June 29th in Vienna!!

For companies who are co-ordinating a group booking of delegates for EuroSTAR 2008, I encourage you to contact Kevin on +353 91 514477 or by email Kevin@qualtechconferences.com as early as possible to ensure you receive the discounts available, a personalised solution to suit your test team and the best value for your money!

The Future of Software Testing Manifesto

by Bob van de Burgt, Programme Chair, EuroSTAR 2008

On top of all the great presentations that will be part of EuroSTAR 2008 we would like to make a statement about the future of software testing to the test community worldwide; a Manifesto that gives declaration of principles and intentions for our journey into the future. This manifesto will be the result not just of a number of special workshops that will be held during the conference, but also through input from all the delegates and speakers who would like to contribute. This will be done via whiteboards available throughout the conference to create mind maps of testing and its future. The result of the manifesto will be presented on the last day of the conference and published on the internet. We know that others have published specific manifestos, and we will take these into account as inputs.

Examples are: The Agile Manifesto (www.agilemanifesto.org),  “Testing for the rest of us” (http://www.developertesting.com/archives/month200702/20070206-000391.html) and “Context Driven Testing” (http://www.context-driven-testing.com/).

Make Your Testing Smarter - Know Your Context!

by Graham Freeburn, Sopra Group Ltd., UK

Have you ever heard the phrase "test smarter not harder"?  As timescales get ever shorter and technology gets ever more complex surely this becomes more vital to the future of software testing.  But how do you do it? A good starting point is first ensure you know the context you are working in and then make the right choices about what to do - that's where context analysis can help you.  For a fundamental example of context analysis just think about a situation where you felt scared or threatened - the "fight or flight response" is your body's primitive, automatic response that prepares the body to "fight" or "flee" from perceived attack, injury or threat to your survival. It is there all the time but only kicks when it’s needed. For another example when you drive your car, you probably adjust your driving style to the conditions - you're more careful when it's raining, icy, etc.  You are demonstrating awareness of your context and use of an appropriate approach to the task in hand which is inherently risk-based!

SOA Testing

by Gerlof Hoekstra, Atos Origin, The Netherlands

Enterprises increasingly make the strategic choice for a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Not all testers are aware that SOA has a strong influence on the test process to be used. This article focuses on SOA testing and offers a ‘sneak preview’ of a short book on this topic that will be available shortly.
