Issue 29   August 5, 2008

Welcome to the first autumn issue of the STAR Tester for 2008! This month I am excited to introduce an article from Dorothy Graham and Isabel Evans outlining their role in the establishment of the Software Testing Manifesto, which will be created and unveiled at EuroSTAR 2008, The Hague.

This issue also includes outstanding articles from two speakers who feature on the 2008 conference programme.  Both Fiona Charles and Herman-Pieter Nijhof will discuss some interesting and thought provoking topics this November. They have kindly supplied us with an overview of their presentations for this month’s newsletter- please see articles below.

The second EuroSTAR Tutorial Day has been announced and will take place in Malmö on Monday, September 22nd. We are offering two full day courses presented by John Fodeh and Lee Copeland who are predominant speakers in today’s testing industry and have years of experience to support their knowledge. Places are limited and it is recommended to book early. Full details and booking form are available on our website

As the final countdown to the 2008 Olympics is officially underway I see it fitting to include a press release from Atos Origin, who are technology partner for the Beijing Olympics and also platinum partner of EuroSTAR 2008. Approximately 10,500 athletes are expected to participate at the Games which begin this Friday, August 8th - I wish them all the very best!

Finally, I must remind you of the Early Bird Deadline of September 19th. With just over 6 weeks remaining it’s time to book your place at EuroSTAR 2008 today and save €250!! Please be aware that hotels in the Hague are very busy during the conference period and delegates area advised to book their accommodation early. A list of recommended accommodation is available on the EuroSTAR website.

Kind regards,

Manifesto Workshops: Building A Message For The Future

by Dorothy Graham, Grove Consultants and Isabel Evans, TSG, UK

How can we build a message for the future? In this conversation, Dot Graham and Isabel Evans discuss their manifesto workshops planned for EuroSTAR 2008. Dot’s workshop focuses on the past; Isabel’s on a route map to the future. They are pleased to be invited to co-host the third workshop which will draft a message for the future – a manifesto for testing in the next 5 to 10 years. Bob’s previous newsletter article gives the background and more information about his plans for the manifesto at the conference.
Dot and Isabel met in June to discuss their plans for the 3 workshops. Their conversation covers why they each chose their particular perspective, what a manifesto statement is, and even a few tongue-in-cheek “anti-manifesto” statements. Testers have a history of working together for the good of testing, whatever company or country they are from; Dot and Isabel see this as an opportunity to bring together ideas from a wide variety of people to produce a concise statement about testing to take the industry forward. Find out how you can contribute to the testing manifesto of 2008.

“The era of the independent tester is over”

“If you can’t code, there’s no room for you on an Agile team. Agile is the future and Agile teams want only generalists.”

Do you buy these? I don’t!

Where Do Old Testers Go?

by Herman-Pieter Nijhof, Accenture, The Netherlands

Where do old testers go?
Actually, where do testers go?
And why are they so keen on going?

In a world where most people live their lives a day at a time it is a stunning challenge to think a lifetime ahead. Testers are great adepts at planning and thinking up scenarios, it is therefore not weird that we apply the same skills to our own lives. During the session we will run through some of the more popular scenarios for the future of a test professional.  And more importantly, discuss why those scenarios are so popular and how you can seriously influence the available choices.
