Two New Publications by TIM School Dean Walter Jamieson to be Issued
Two new publications by TIM School Dean Walter Jamieson on sustainable tourism development and related topics were recently published and distributed across the globe.  "A Manual for Water and Waste Management: What the Tourism Industry Can Do to Improve its Performance" is a manual that provides guidelines and examples of how tourism operations can achieve positive results in waste management and minimize harm to a community’s ecological and physical systems.  It does not replace academic or professional publications and it does not deal with all the technical dimensions of wastewater or solid waste management but introduces important methods and major impacts.  The manual is designed for people involved in the operation of diverse tourism facilities and presents information in a user-friendly and practical manner.  The intent is not to replace experts but to provide opportunities for management and staff to ensure that operations meet required environmental standards.  Additional information sources are provided when appropriate.

"Poverty Alleviation through Sustainable Tourism Development" provides government officials with practical information on the planning and management principles and processes of sustainable tourism development.  Its intent is to provide practical processes and techniques for achieving pro poor tourism.  It describes how tourism can reduce poverty and it gives public officials the tools to develop policies locally.  It provides all stakeholders with realistic information in tourism development – how to gather and analyze information, make decisions, develop products, implement a marketing strategy and monitor the development process.  The ultimate goal of this manual is to empower the poor to improve their standard of living while protecting their culture, ideas and way of life.
