Glanbia unveils yoghurt 'shots'
Range to be called Yoplait Essence

Glanbia has announced ambitions to double its market share with the introduction of "shot-sized" yoghurt drinks.

Following two years of research, the company claims it can now condense more nutrients into yoghurt shots, to help a number of issues such as heart and bone health, and weight control. The range is to be called Yoplait Essence and it is hoped it will add EUR15m a year to Glanbia coffers in its first few years on the market.

Joe Collum, marketing director at Glanbia's consumer division, says nothing on the market is as 'potent' as its new product. He says the product will be the only one of its type which helps reduce cholesterol and blood pressure. The move marks the first initiative by the company's Consumer Foods Division and follows a EUR15m investment by Glanbia and Enterprise Ireland in the Glanbia Group Innovation Centre in Kildare.

Collum says that the new products will target two markets: the fresh dairy product and functional foods sectors. The fresh dairy market is valued at Euro230m a year, and the functional foods segment of that market is estimated to be worth Euro85m.

Glanbia hopes its share of this income will increase to 12pc following the launch.
