5S Works for WWI
Walsh Western International (WWI) BPI program is in progress now for almost a year. To date there has been 150 yellow belts, 50 green belts and 4 black belts trained within WWI. A BPI initiative that is in progress is the 5S program, which commenced in Tilburg over 3 months ago, with excellent results. Dublin, the UK and Limerick have followed suit. It is planned that 5S will be instated in all WWI sites by end of June 2004.
What is the 5S program? Originating in Japan, as with so many successful management tools and theories. The 5S originally stood for “Seiri”, “Seiton”, “Seiso”, “Seiketsu”, “Shitsuke” and this has been since translated into a westernised version “Sort”, “Set in Order”, “Shine”, “Standardise” and “Sustain”.

What are the benefits?
Firstly to take a look at the Employee benefits of implementing 5S?
- Provides opportunity for the employee to influence workplace layout and how work should be done (helps buy-in)
- Makes the workplace a more pleasant place to work in
- Makes the job more satisfying
- Removes the frustrations and obstacles from the work
- Helps to tell the employee what is expected of them, and when and where it should be done
- Makes communications amongst employees easier
Then to examine the BPI benefits of implementing 5S?
- Ideal route to a subsequent 6 Sigma activity
- Highly-visible BPI advertisement
- Involves everyone in the affected area
- Targets lower-hanging fruit
- Has long-lasting benefits
The bottom line is that a Five S program will improve profits, and at the same time improve both quality and safety. It does this by reducing wasted time and materials; improving daily or shift start up times; reducing maintenance and downtime; improving efficiency and productivity; improving employee morale; and simplifying the work environment Current Status of 5S in WWI The 5S’s program has no hierarchical boundaries. All employees have enthusiastically embraced the program. The 5S program achieves company wide awareness of, and involvement in BPI. It has instilled a pride in employee’s appearance of their work environment. As mentioned above the sustain phase of the 5S program consists of an interdepartmental audit of work areas. The 5S program epitomises BPI, which is that is a structural, cross-functional, participatory and controlled approach. To date results from the 5S program within WWI have proved that - IT WORKS!
